“It really came about because I had just read John Ratey’s book, Spark; The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain and thought we ought to present an exercise option to my brother.
“Because of poor balance and coordination, anxiety and overall lack of encouragement, he had never embarked upon any physical activity in his life. Three years ago it was suggested that walking on a treadmill might be a goal he could achieve. Despite doubts all around that he could accomplish this he began walking a few minutes each morning. It’s been over three years now and he continues to walk for a half hour, five days a week. When he feels especially anxious he chooses to get back on the treadmill and walk for another session. His sense of accomplishment is such that it’s inspired others in his day program to walk on the treadmill as well.”
